I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 9 and in 2021 I will be a year 10. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.
For the past 3 weeks and we have been learning what culture is,
Culture is like your daily routine when you come home, for instance, when you get home do you take off your shoes? Do you go have food? Or do you have a shower? These things are normal to you and are the things that you might do every day but to others, this may seem weird.
My cultural item was a lotus flower, the national flower of India. The Lotus flower is regarded in many different cultures, especially in eastern religions, as a symbol of purity, enlightenment, self-regeneration and rebirth. the lotus flower is a very cool flower as it submerges every night into river water and miraculously re-blooms the next morning, sparklingly clean.
We are looking at the movie “the power of one” and was directed by John G. Avildsen. The movie followed the main charter PK. I’ll be looking at some scenes and looking at what types of shots are used during the movie.
In this scene, lighting is used skillfully and this is demonstrated with the headmaster of the school being shown in silhouette on the floor as he looms and watches what the bully intends to do to PK. This makes us understand that the headmaster is someone that is to be reckoned with even before we see or hear him. The purpose of this is to show the power that the headmaster has over the bully and that he was watching and waiting to see what they intended to do to PK. combined with how the bully is always trying to apes the headmaster and those above him. we already know that the headmaster is going to put a stop to this without him even saying a word. This can be juxtaposed to when PK goes to the waterfall to find the answers to his problems/questions and it lit down from the sky by the sun and really shows the beauty of the scene compared to the stark lighting used in the scene to make everything more dramatic and scary.
A long shot is used very well in this scene to show the headmaster in the background with the kids in the foreground that were hanging PK slowly releasing whos watching them. This is demonstrated by showing the whole body of the headmaster in the background with the kids that were hanging PK by the legs from the roof in the foreground. This makes us understand that the headmaster is important as all of the kids immediately stop what they're doing to see who watched them. The purpose of this was to show the whole setting and to show who was here to save PK.
combined with the lighting used to make the headmaster stand in the darkness it makes the scene more dramatic. This reminds me of the scene where the same low angle long shot is used to show the conflict between geel piet and the officer.
An extreme close up shot is used effectively in this scene to show the detail in the wood and the engraving. For example in this scene, we see a symbol engraved into the wood of his bed. This makes the audience feel scared for what's to come for PK and what bad thing the bully is planning to do next. The director did this to how dedicated the bully and his followers are to this symbol and the people Behind it. This worked well with the other noises that the children were making adding to the chaos in the scene. This reminds me of a later scene of the bully tattooing this symbol to his arm to fully become one of them.
A close-up shot is used skillfully in this scene to show what the bully is inscribing onto his arm what we see in this scene is the bully using a small knife to cut into his arm while the bully's friend puts ink in the cut.
this makes the audience realize just how crazy the bully is and how devoted he is to this cause. The purpose of this is so that we can later recognize him later in the film and so that when we see him again we are reminded of what they did to him (PK). This worked well with the fact that they kept his character style the same but just made him crazier for revenge, making his character development more consistent. This reminds me of the scene with the same symbol engraved into PKs bed and how they are both permanent in their own ways
I have chosen the song, "do they know it's Christmas time". I think that the reason they recorded this song on and chose to sing it at live aid was after bob Geldof went to Africa to see the famine for himself. He thought that someone should bring to attention what's happening there.
Is this a form of protest?
Well in my opinion it's not as they didn't know what was really happening in Africa and all they were trying to do was bring attention to the famine there.
Do you think that one person could start a concert is similar to live aid? ( ignoring covid)
Yes, I think that someone could hold a concert very similar to live aid with a bit of help. (this is all ignoring covid) I think that the concert would be very big and maybe even bigger than live aid as more and more people today have TVs and internet, and with that, it would make it so that anyone could see the concert and even more people could help with the donations that would go towards whatever reason that they are holding the concert.
This is one of my favourite songs by Queen that was played live at live aid.
How significant are music and musicians today in affecting change in the world today?
Musicians have a lot of power today as many listen to music. Music through the years has been used many times to prove a point or send a message. For instance, the song "Give peace a chance" was a song that was used by Vietnam war protesters during the years of the Vietnam war.
The song "do they know its Christmas time at all" is a song that was made by Bob Geldof . he made the song after seeing the extreme hunger in Africa he flew there to see it for himself and after seeing things for himself he flew back to Britain and upon his arrival he and the band ultra vox worked together to compose the song "do they know its Christmas". together with other British pop stars, they worked together to release the song before the holidays. the song sold several million copies in 1984 and all proceeds were directed towards helping with famine relief. after this he made two concerts to play at the same time, on was in Wimberly stadium in London, England and in the JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. in total the concert was seen in 110 countries and raised 127 million dollars to go to towards fighting the famine in Ethiopia.
This is a small Pictochart that I made about cybersecurity and cryptography, these two things are emerging fields of work that involve helping companies or protect themselves from cyber-attacks. Cryptography has actually been used since 1900BC.
