The Starfish Poem 

The main message of this poem is that even if you can't make a huge difference you can still make a difference even if "It made a difference for that one." (the final line of the poem) It's still a difference that counts.

Evidence of this is the wise man saying "young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along with it. You can't possibly make a difference!" and the young man responding by picking up another starfish and throwing it into the ocean and stating "It made a difference for that one."
